PVV – your money is no good here, Chanel Preston!!

In the movies, when someone says something like “Your money is no good here!!,” they’re usually trying to be nice – giving you something and refusing to accept payment. Even in The Shining (1980).

But in real life, when someone tells you they won’t take your money… well, maybe they’re probably just being an asshole.

At least, maybe they’re probably just being an asshole if they’re a bank and you’re affiliated with the adult industry.

My righteous indignation exploded this past Friday with reports of Chanel Preston being refused banking services at City National Bank in Los Angeles, CA because of “compliance reasons.”

According to NBC News (here, May 17, 2013):

[Chanel] Preston recently opened a business account with City National Bank in Los Angeles. When she went to deposit checks into the account days later, however, she was told it had been shut down because of “compliance issues.”

She found the manager she had worked with originally and asked what had happened. The bank, she was told, was worried about the Webcam shows she had on her site and had revoked the account.

(City National declined to comment on Preston’s accusations and on whether it had any policy regarding accounts tied to the porn industry)…

Preston noted she [had also] been denied a loan because of her profession — though at a different bank.

“[The loan officer] asked me ‘are you affiliated with the adult entertainment industry?’ When I said yes, she said ‘We will not give you a loan.’,” she said. (full story here)

The full story from NBC News also includes discussion of Marc Greenberg, founder of the softcore production studio MRG Entertainment. Marc recently filed suit against JPMorgan Chase, alleging that the bank violated fair lending laws and its own policy when they refused to underwrite a loan for “moral reasons.”

“Moral reasons”? “Compliance issues” with no discussion of what exactly wasn’t being complied with?

what. the. fkkkkkkk?!!!!

One: really, banks? Morality and compliance? Excuse me while I laugh in your hypocritical faces…

Two: the idea that this specific Chanel incident is somehow news was especially interesting to me. Though I commend her for being willing to speak out, Chanel is not the first person this has happened to. And I highly doubt she’ll be the last.

Over the years, I’ve heard countless stories precisely along these lines from other performers, producers, company owners, online business proprietors, and on and on. Regardless of what the specific business is, if it has to do with adult entertainment, this type of blatant discrimination is nothing new.

…and Three: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again (and again): if this were any other group of people – ANYONE besides porn folks – the world would be up in arms. Protests and demonstrations, reformatory law, and entire social movements have been based on these exact practices happening to other marginalized groups.

If Chanel were anything other than a porn star, her experiences wouldn’t be the first we were hearing of this (publicly) and there is absolutely NO WAY we as a society would simply stand by. Because this is discrimination.

It’s not up to banks to decide what’s moral or not, nor is it up to them to decide whose dollars spend differently than others. Neither Chanel nor Marc are breaking the law via their chosen professions, and they both have money – in the case of banking, that’s all that should matter.

But, for as much as this situation with Chanel is currently a hot and enraging topic, it’s really just more of the same – not the first time and probably not the last.

That’s what’s fkkked the most.

If you’re a customer at City National Bank, I invite you to take your business elsewhere. Tell them it’s because you refuse to support a company that’s so blatantly discriminatory.
