Review – New Sensations’ Anchorman: A XXX Parody (2011)

Review by Vittoria Buzza

As some of you may remember, I love watching well-made adult parodies. After watching New SensationsThe Flinstones: A XXX Parody (2010), a whole new world opened up for me. Now I can hardly watch a movie without imagining what the parody would be like. This makes things quite difficult sometimes, especially in movie theaters ;)

When I heard about New SensationsAnchorman: A XXX Parody (2011) I knew I had to watch it. Not only was I mesmerized by New Sensations’ Flinstones film, I am also a die-hard fan of the original Anchorman (2004). I was pretty sure I would enjoy my time with Anchorman XXX, but I was also aware that I would be a pretty harsh critic because of my love for the original.

Being a former news station coffee girl, news writer, sportscaster, prompter operator, etc. (the list could go on for years), I feel deeply connected any time I watch something related to news stations. So, for more than one reason, I immediately unwrapped the DVD upon its arrival and started watching.

This film is not a regular parody – it’s not just a remake of the source material. Like the Flinstones parody, Anchorman XXX takes place at a different point in time (later than or after the original). It’s like a “what happens next.”

The box reads: “Top notch anchorman, Ron Burgundy (Jack Lawrence) has moved his roots from San Diego to the fine trappings of Los Angeles, CA and he has brought the entire Channel 4 News Team with him! Unfortunately, Brian (Dale DaBone), Brick (Anthony Rosano), and Champ (Eric Masterson) are all unemployed as well. In an effort to restart their once stellar careers, the gang and their fearless leader must join forces with the ever-popular Veronica Corningstone (Tasha Reign) and her all-female team. Can they play ‘second fiddle’ to the ladies? Or is it the ideal news story? No matter what, Ron is getting laid and getting paid… and that goes for everyone!”

And here’s the trailer…

Apparently Ron’s career plummeted shortly after the last time we all saw him in San Diego because of a scandal involving wearing a “tit necklace” while reporting on air. Yikes! As soon as this happened, Veronica (Tasha Reign) started up her own all-women news team, and the ladies have been leading the pack ever since.

But Ron is ready to get back on top (literally) and take over the news station, one sexcapade at a time. For this, he enlists all his guy friends from the pervious film and goes on a journey to L.A. to find Veronica’s news team.

Let me just start off by saying that Jack Lawrence does an excellent job in playing Ron. His facial expressions, mannerisms, and voice are all very convincing. I was definitely sold on his character.

Once they all arrive, Ron takes Veronica out on a date to remind her of the love they once had. At this dinner, Corningstone confesses that she still thinks about him sexually and they somehow magically find themselves in a bedroom soon after.

After twelve minutes of dialogue, character development, and funny jokes, the first sex scene of this film finally takes place. Some people might argue that twelve minutes is entirely too much time without sex in an adult film, but I was very fond of this.

Veronica and Ron’s scene was excellent because it was exactly what the original lacked. There was always far too much tension in this sense, but nothing was ever done about it. I greatly appreciated finally being able to have that image in my mind of Ron and Veronica getting it on.

Because of their sexual fun times, Veronica agrees to bring Ron onboard the all-female news team to the displeasure of the other ladies. Hmmm… Ron sure made it seem easy. All he had to do was Veronica in order to get back on the news. Actually, it’s not that much harder at a news station in real life… (ooops!! am I allowed to say that?)

Even though Lawrence’s Ron Burgundy was very convincing, I found Tasha Reign’s Veronica to be lacking a little something. I understand that this is both a parody and a new set of adventures for our San Diegans and that the character portrayals don’t have to be exactly the same, but I greatly admired and appreciated Veronica’s strength in the original and this was lacking here. XXX Veronica gives in very easily to Ron’s sexual demands. A little too easily, I thought.

Now that Ron is a field reporter, the rest of the boys come on board and try to seduce each of their female counterparts in to letting them on the news team. Of course, they succeed shortly after having sex with each one of them.

The following four sex scenes are incredibly interesting because of their locations. As I previously mentioned, I worked at a news station (for almost four years) and seeing people get down and dirty in rooms that I am familiar with was quite hilarious! The rooms are as follows: satellite truck (Christine and Brian), the intern room (two interns), the news station break room (Diane and Champ), and news tape room (Patricia and Brick). Honestly, I would have loved to have seen some sort of action take place in the control room of… oh wait, I’d better not say.

From my previous description of the locations of the sex scenes, it might seem a little confusing to read about interns having sex, right? I mean, were there even any interns in the original film? Well, these female interns (Adriana Sephora and Dylan Ryan) provide viewers with a lovely girl-girl scene wherein they pleasure each other in a plethora of ways as Ron and Champ secretly watch.

So, what happens now? All of Ron’s team ends up having sex with all the ladies on the news team, and….? Well, they all end up teaming up and forming one big, happy news team family! Of course, right? I am sure that is probably one of the most sexually active news teams in the nation. Hands down.

Overall, I enjoyed this film. The humor was very much like the original, and the way the story unfolded provided an interesting twist. The only thing I was a bit weary of was how easily the women were swayed and seduced by the men. They all fell for the trap so easily. There was no hesitation whatsoever to take their clothes off and give in to their sexual desires. But I guess it makes sense – they’re not in San Diego anymore, right?

Recommended for: Anchorman (2004) fans, anyone who fantasized about Burgundy and Corningstone, those of us who love elaborate plots, and anyone who enjoys a good adult parody.

BTS: the BTS section was almost 30 minutes long and consisted of interviews with each one of the characters. Jack Lawrence stayed in character the entire time, even when they were asking him questions that had nothing to do with Ron! The questions were pretty general things, which they ask in most BTS’s, about the scenes, about their careers, etc. The most interesting part of the BTS was the interview with Eddie Powell (director of the film). They interviewed him as he was throwing away some trash, which made him seem super down to earth and cool.

And, fyi, “It is anchor MAN, not anchor lady!!”

  1. I don’t know. The whole parody thing has just gotten stale. Sort of like the “who can make up the most clever porn film name” thing. Occasionally, there’s a new good idea, but it just seems like these things are just too easily contrived. I’m waiting for the porn take on Bollywood musicals. I’ve never actually seen a Bollywood musical in its entirety, but I know enough to imagine what a porn spoof would be like.

  2. @KC – interesting (bollywood parody, oh em gee!!)… there was a “pitfalls and pleasures/bads and goods of parodies” seminar at AEE this year, and your sentiment about things getting stale was definitely a topic of discussion… I feel like the market and the resulting content production are definitely turning a corner.
