Review – Burning Angel Entertainment’s The Walking Dead: A Hardcore Parody (2013)

Zombies… they’re so hot right now!!

Sometime in between moving and watching World War Z (which was really good), Smash Pictures’ Beyond Fucked: A Zombie Odyssey (2013) arrived in the mail…

Wait, what?!! I mean sometime since watching Smash Pictures’ Beyond Fucked: A Zombie Odyssey, Burning Angel Entertainment’s The Walking Dead: A Hardcore Parody (2013) arrived in the mail.

Zombies… they’re so hot right now.

Burning Angel Entertainment’s Walking Dead XXX just released this month, but the film has already had an extensive life re yellowface and invisible racism leading up. But more on that later. Let’s focus on review basics for the moment.

The Walking Dead XXX parodies AMC’s amazing “The Walking Dead.” However, whereas the television show is serious, this film is kindy funny. I say “kinda” because, though it means to be lighthearted and witty, much of the humor is lost in being unclear.

To wit:

After months in a hospital bed, County Sheriff Rick woke up from a coma and quickly realized the world had been overrun by zombies. One odd notion was especially troubling; these zombies are hungry for brains… and sex! A jizz shot was the only sure-fire way to return these undead creatures to the grave!

Will Lori continue to bang Shane or Rick? Will Michonne and Andrea finally fuck? Will Daryl shoot his bow? Find out on the next episode of The Walking Dead: A Hardcore Parody.

We get a lot of plot threads from different seasons in the show: the Lori-Shane-Rick triangle (which is resolved quickly after a nice three-way), the search for Sophia, and the (sexual) tension between Andrea and Michonne. These story lines fall apart though when trying to bring in the zombie element…

I know, I know – we’re talking about zombies here, and I’m trying to figure out how the whole thing “makes sense”? But why the hell would you put your cock in a zombie mouth? And what’s this whole thing about banging zombies to fully end them..? Or bring them back..? I just don’t get it!!

*but*

If you aren’t looking for things to make sense, there’s a lot to enjoy in this film – tons of sexy sexing zombies and zombie extras; impressive makeup, costuming, and set design; and great acting performances from Wolf Hudson (quirky!!) and Tommy Pistol (fantastic blend of weird-funny and dramatic skill – the guy is awesome).

So yeah… in sum, The Walking Dead XXX was fine. It’s not the best thing I’ve seen from Burning Angel but, though it was a bit off mark at times, the effort was obvious.

Now, let’s get back to that whole yellowface thing…

In case you missed it, sometime back in January/February, Burning Angel got A LOT of flack for putting performer Danny Wylde in yellowface (complete with taped eyes) to play Porno Glenn. I wrote about the entire thing quite extensively here, and a very meaningful discussion amongst and between people directly involved in the production happened in the comments – it’s a great read, albeit also super dense.

And now, after finally getting to watch the actual film, I gotta say: I maintain everything I said back in February.

This was (is) an instance of yellowface.

Though I do not think anyone at Burning Angel is racist or an asshole, this was (is) a racist action – an example of wider US cultural issues related to racism and Asian-Americans, among many other things.

You can go back and read the post and subsequent discussion for the whole deal, but I gotta say one additional thing – this doesn’t have to be a total loss, something *good* can come out of this… Awareness. Acknowledgement. Engagement. Being ok with messing up and setting goals to try harder. All these things can come directly from this film, and that is awesome.

During the opening credits of The Walking Dead XXX, this message popped up on screen:

WDxxx grab

(pictured: yes, I took a picture of my entire screen because I couldn’t figure out how to get it to grab – whatever!!)

Clearly, the folks at Burning Angel are aware that some measure of engagement is necessary. Though this disclaimer is not exactly a huge meaningful statement, it’s something. In some ways, I admire the fact that they still released this film in light of all the negative press it has received – perhaps it’s their way of acknowledging the mistake and attempting to move forward?

I can only hope that we all take a lesson from this – we all have the capacity to mess up, but it’s how we deal with our mistakes that matters most. Through active engagement, we can facilitate growth and change in really positive ways.

Recommended for: zombie, horror, and camp aficionados and for anyone who has ever made a mistake …and attempted to learn from it.
