PVV/Review – examples of romance porn #3, Wicked Pictures’ Heart Strings (2011)

Recently, I began discussing a new genre that seems to have been emerging in mainstream segments of adult production during the past two-ish years – “romance” porn intended for women and couples. (here and here)

Even at its most nascent and/or broad, I find the idea of porn for women and/or porn for couples extremely compelling. Compelling, but also a little bit sketchy – whatever/whoever could these descriptors mean? What does such content look like? Who is it for/what’s the target audience? And is it possible that there’s content out there that can appeal to ALL women and/or ALL couples??

I’m gonna go with probably not.

From everything I can tell, the bulk of the content being produced within mainstream segments of the industry under the auspices of this genre is intended (ostensibly?) for heterosexual women and/or heterosexual couples. Right off, that limits this genre’s scope by lots of women. And certainly, there’s more to it; certainly, there’s more behind romance porn for women and couples.

I decided to take a gander at three recently produced (and conveniently all XBIZ Award-nominated) examples from this genre to get an idea of what’s what. Accordingly, I give you Adult Source Media’s Book of Love, New Sensations’ Dear Abby, and Wicked Pictures’ Heart Strings.* Enjoy!!

Romance Porn for Women and Couples, Example #3: Wicked Pictures’ Heart Strings (2011)

Oooohhh…

Heartbroken Emma (Brooklyn Lee) finds relief when handsome Tommy (Michael Vegas) shows up at the ranch she shares with her sister (Gracie Glam). The attraction between them is immediate as Tommy proves he has a way with troubled horses, guitars and broken hearts. Eventually they find their passion too much to deny. But just as Emma is sure that she’s fallen for Tommy, a visitor (India Summer) shows up and reveals a secret about Tommy’s true identity. Reeling from betrayal, Emma evicts Tommy from the ranch… but can she force him from her heart?

Holy goodness!!

Emma – a beautiful, sweet, and horsey (in a good way) country girl is cautious and bruised after getting unceremoniously dumped by her “college guy” boyfriend…

(pictured: our small town heroine with Mr. College Heartbreaker)

And then some other guy, some new and mysterious guy who is really respectful and good with horses, drifts into town – Tommy. Even Emma’s big sister likes him (big sisters are important). And the first time they hook up, Tommy won’t just bang her in the barn… (a literal barn, complete with bales of hay)… he pulls away in an “oh my goodness, not like this” (*gasp*)-kind of way!!

Maybe he feels guilty about something?

And then, when they finally do do it, it’s super hott and romantic and looks exactly like you’d imagine making love to some passionate lover/drifter who you’ve only known for a little while but feel like you’ve known forever (if you’re into that sort of thing) would look like… only with lights and make-up and condoms and a pop. (this is still a movie, this is still porn)

Kind of like this…

(pictured: our small town heroine with Mr. Mystery)

And then some evil bitch from the city rolls up on your ranch… I mean, Emma’s ranch… and she’s way pretty – a different, fancy kind of pretty you totally think you can’t compete with (even though you can) – and she says “He’s nothing like you think” or something like that, and she’s not lying. So then you get super angry and kick him off your ranch and cry and oh my gosh your heart is broken.

Again.

But then he comes back and tries to explain… and his story is good. Like, really good. What do you do???

I mean, what’s a country girl to do?

I’m so not telling.

Heart Strings is good. Really good. It’s actually really excellent.

First and foremost, the script is wonderful and sweet and romantic and sad-turning-into-so-much-happier and all that. Yes, it’s also Cinderella-like and completely implausible, but that seems to be the point of romance/fantasy stuff in the first place. The whole thing unfolded perfectly, exactly as you’d expect and exactly as it should.

Yes, the sex is still hardcore, but it’s porn – it’s supposed to be. Heart Strings, however, is shot noticeably differently, even relative to Book of Love and Dear Abby, such that it’s not so porno hardcore. Especially the first scene. The first scene, where Emma and her “college guy” have sex outside in the back of a truck right before he dumps her and she is so so sad, is hott hott hott. (seriously)

But the sex was only one aspect of this film.

The production value overall was wonderful and very different from your “average” (whatever that means) adult film. There were horses and barns and dinner scenes and people wearing flannel shirts and an acme highlight bit at the end that I will not reveal for fear of spoiling it for you – suffice it to say that it added immensely to the authenticity of the overall package.

And speaking of packages, check out the back of the box…

(pictured: is this showing on Lifetime? no way!!)

Thorough, developed, different, and on “romance porn for women and couples” point.

I absolutely loved Heart Strings. It was damn near perfect, led by the considerable skill of its director, Stormy Daniels. I may not be a hopeless romantic and this genre is not necessarily “my thing,” but I know quality when I see it.

And I’ll tell you a little secret – I actually watched this film for the first time months ago, and I occasionally still hum the theme song. #justsayin

*The three-film sample I used in this series is based strictly on 1) being 2012 XBIZ nomed and 2) seeming to represent a broad swatch of romance porn content. I also just pulled from what I had on hand. These selections are in no way representative of all the content currently available in this genre.
