PVV – universityofhawaii.xxx

A new, island-based pay adult website is currently heating up the interwebs… spewing lava all over the place, and whatnot – universityofhawaii.xxx

hehe

First and foremost, this site has absolutely no affiliation with any university in the University of Hawaii system or with the system itself, nor does it pretend to. As of right now, it contains no mention of GPAs or majors or university registrars or libraries or the like. It’s just a regular old Hawaiian-themed adult site, the product of some clever “pornographer” capitalizing on the availability of a .xxx domain.

I just read about universityofhawaii.xxx on AVN; and because this story is just too ironically perfect as it is, here’re some bits from Anna Oui’s coverage:

University of Hawaii Threatens Lawsuit Over .XXX Porn Site

HAWAII—For months, the news has been filled with stories of colleges and universities gobbling up .xxx domain names that contain variations of their names in order to keep cybersquatters and other opportunists from using the names to push porn or hold the domains for ransom. Though some might have figured that was money poorly spent, many school administrators are no doubt thankful today that they made that decision after hearing the news that the University of Hawaii is threatening to sue the operator of a website with a name that the school failed to secure—universityofhawaii.xxx…

[On February 6, 2012], University of Hawaii President M.R.C. Greenwood expressed to Hawaii News Now her reaction to learning about the site.

‘This is not a University of Hawaii site,’ she clarified. ‘We are appalled that anyone would use our good name this way…’

[However], president Greenwood is adamant that the school made the right decision when it opted not to secure the domain ahead of general availability.

‘We considered it, but then when we thought about it we realized that there are so many names that could have xxx attached to it,’ Greenwood said. ‘So this was the decision that we made that we would fight it if it happened but there was no way we could completely buy every name.’

Of the current situation, she added, ‘In other cases, this has been used as a mechanism for forcing people to buy their good name back. We would rather fight it legally than submit to that kind of extortion’…” (original posting here)

Let’s read that one part again: The protective advanced purchasing of .xxx domain names has been used as a mechanism for forcing people to buy their good name back. The University of Hawaii would rather fight it legally than submit to that kind of extortion!!

(I may have rabble-roused that up some)

Thank you, President Greenwood, for sticking to your guns and calling bullshit extortion “bullshit extortion.” I really appreciate you standing strong, and I’m sorry that you now have to deal with this crap as a result of your, in my opinion correct, decision.

There are many other dimensions to this story: freshman students are appalled (appalled!! …appalled? student reaction to this site is a story in of itself) by the site, President Greenwood sent a strongly worded letter to state lawmakers and other officials expressing her dismay over the site; and, at this time, the registered owner of universityofhawaii.xxx is unknown/unclear.

I hate to say I told you so, and I hate to be all “You only care because it’s your name on the .xxx, University of Hawaii!!” I also hate to think that this little incident is going to drive other .xxx holdouts to scramble to purchase their domain name(s)… so don’t let it!!

Take a stand, people!! Don’t let yourselves or your creativity or your brands or your futures be manipulated by some already-rich puppet master with zero good intentions!! Fight like the badass University of Hawaii!!

Perhaps this universityofhawaii.xxx situation is a good thing… Perhaps those who didn’t take .xxx extortion seriously are going to pay attention… Perhaps, as the University of Hawaii is cornered in to fighting .xxx, others will realize that they too can fight… Perhaps some sort of useful precedent will be established…

Perhaps.

And as always, .xxx has been pending to brewing to becoming law to fighting for ground for years now, and I have been following the whole shebang (from news to conferences to conversations) for just as long. I can see the negatives associated with .xxx (obviously), but a handful of others insist upon extolling its pertpetually-yet-to-be-articulated virtues. I have tried and tried to connect with .xxx advocates, for a public interview or private conversation, but nothing ever materializes.

So once again, I implore – will someone please explain to me what’s good about .xxx? I want to know both sides!!

And I also really want to know who owns this dominion name. Wouldn’t it be nuts if it was ICM Registry Ship Captain and CEO Stuart Lawley?

PS there are no live links to the universityofhawaii.xxx in this posting for a reason – I will continue to resist Stu and the rest of his gang in my own small way.
