PVV – Porn To Be Automatically Blocked Online in the UK?!!

Wait… what?!!

Yep, that’s what I just read – “Porn To Be Automatically Blocked Online In The UK, Prime Minister David Cameron Announces” (7/23/13)

Accordingly:

Online porn in the UK will be blocked by Internet service providers. Prime Minister David Cameron has announced Monday a new measure that will automatically filter porn content online unless subscribers opt to receive it.

Mr Cameron said in his speech that he aims to protect the innocence of children, and one way to do so is to limit online pornographic content in households. (here)

My immediate reaction to this is god awful – it’s censorship, it ghettoizes adult content, and it’s just plain stupid economically…

…but there’s also this: what will default adult content blocks do to all the folks who like to claim that the (over)proliferation and (over)abundance of porn has somehow sought them out and harmed them (and their children)? You know, folks like the guy who’s trying to sue Apple for NOT including default adult content blocks – allegedly, Apple’s product that was sold to him without any warning of the damage pornography (might) cause!!

“Lawyer Sues Apple for Not Blocking Porn” – A Nashville lawyer is trying to sue Apple because it does not filter porn from all of its devices, and he typed in a wrong domain name and mistakenly went to a porn site… (7/12/13 here)

If all you have to do is change the settings on your computer and – voilà – porn, then who cares? I mean, I know I’ve repeatedly said things along the lines of: “Just change the settings on your computer – RTA tags are already in place!! (that and maybe pay more attention to what our kids are doing online)” – Isn’t it easy enough to go both ways?

In addition to being ghettoizing censorship, default blocks will help end excuse makers’ excuses. Now, very clearly, folks like Nashville Lawyer will have been out looking for porn. And now, very clearly, we will be discussing parental ir/responsibility.

Or the whole thing will just blow over… or blow up… and not in a fun way.
