You know, when I stumble upon genius …when I slide up against something brilliant …when an idea is so elegant and simple and epically useful that I go “goddamn it!! why the heck didn’t I think of that!!” …well, when something like that happens I feel compelled to share it with the world. And bebes, something along those lines has happened today. (pictured: 3ach3961, a genius)
My pal ZW sent me a link to this YouTube clip yesterday. In it, Divinity3372 deconstructs definitions of “sex trafficking” and “severe forms of sex trafficking in persons.” She then goes through an article entitled “State, FBI commit staff to fight sex trade during Super Bowl” recently posted on DallasNews.com, and demonstrates the ways in which notions of sex trafficking are sensationalized in the media (among other things).
It was really interesting, but I didn’t quite get why ZW sent it to me… I’m not all that into football, I don’t live in Dallas, and it didn’t really have anything to do with porn. I thought that maybe there would be some outlandish moment wherein porn and sex trafficking were conflated in the “news” piece, but no… so why ZW, why did you send me this??!!
I was confused, but I’m definitely not one to shy away from a puzzle. I started digging around the associated links and reading my way through the comments. Nothing and more nothing …but then I saw it.
YouTube user 3ach3961 has done something some truly amazing – he has mirrored some of Shelley Lubben’s YouTube video postings, uploading them to his own site and thus, most significantly, allowing for uncensored discussion of their content.
(wait for a moment… think about how goddamn crafty smart awesome that is… ok, resume reading)
Now for those of you who don’t know who Shelly Lubben is, I will be brief.* Shelly Lubben worked as an adult performer under the pseudonym “Roxy” for about two years in the early 1990s. According to iafd.com, she has 14 performer credits.
She is now an anti-porn activist and the leader of the faith-based Pink Cross Foundation. She is very vocal and goes around speaking at just about every type of adult-related media event one can imagine about her experiences in the industry and her/foundation’s mission to:
“…combat community deterioration due to pornography and prostitution through attempts to educate legislation in order to enforce health and safety laws within the pornography industry, to protect adult industry workers from sexually transmitted diseases and other job-related abuses, to ameliorate the secondary negative effects of pornography on the general public and to toughen laws to protect children from accessing online pornography.”
Shelley, her foundation, and her perspective stir up a lot of controversy; but as far as I can tell, she is not very open to critique, counter-narratives, or different experiences. The complete absence of critical remarks on any of her YouTube video postings points to this tendency. Certainly not every person who views her postings feels favorably about what is being said…
So then, what 3ach3961 has done by mirroring/reposting Shelley’s videos is invite unedited, uncensored discussion about the sentiments expressed therein – dang!
Here are two that he has already posted… This first one is Shelley speaking at an adult convention event (direct link here).
In this second one, Shelley speaks about obscenity and “illegal” pornography (direct link here).
My take on either of these videos is beyond the scope of this posting – what is most relevant I think is the newly created platform for open and uncensored discussion. So I must say… Bravo, 3ach3961!! You humble me with your craftiness, my friend. And get to commenting, bebes – your voices are just as important as anyone’s!! (I feel so inspired!! :)
* I could write about Shelley Lubben for days, but I will spare you (read: save it for later). If you’re interested in some more information on her, you can check out any of these links below. Of course, no amount of links are a replacement for your own research, good judgment, and informed opinion. I encourage you to look further into this issue and make up your own mind.
