I’ve been out of town for a few days and, consequently, not in full work mode. Surprisingly though, during those few days, the world did not stop!!
Here are some interesting things that I noticed while the rest of the world was so rudely not paying attention to my vacation time: condoms in LA, porn to Phoenix?; the TLA RAW award nominees were announced; and a booking gig for “leprechauns” (ugh) this March – enjoy!!
1. Condom law in LA, porn to Phoenix?
So LA’s condom law goes into effect today (March 5, 2012), and there has been much discussion surrounding what to do (you can read about some of that here). One proposed course of action is a big move… to Las Vegas, to somewhere (anywhere!!) in Florida, and/or to Phoenix.
This past weekend, there was a lot of press about the industry moving to Phoenix. All kinds of extremely weighty and potentially problematic issues emerge with this speculative possibility. This little story (published and updated on March 3, 2012) and video raises some of them.
“Porn Stars Flocking to Phoenix for Filming
PHOENIX – When you think of ‘Porn in the Valley,’ southern California probably comes to mind. But soon, that could all change – because of the billion dollar porn industry.
It is seriously considering moving its operations here to our valley.
Sweeping health regulations will require porn performers in California to wear condoms while on location starting on Monday.
The landmark law is a rare attempt to regulate how films are made.
The industry is fighting back, and on Saturday night, they brought that fight to Phoenix, and that might not be all.
Adult movie star and film producer Taryn Thomas signed autographs for fans at the first-ever Adult Film Convention in Phoenix — which happens to coincide with the Fifth Annual Porn Star Ball held here in the valley.

This after a strict, new law in California is set to change the way movies are made there by requiring condom use.
‘I wonder what’s going to happen for the next ‘Fast and the Furious’ movie? Will Vin Diesel have to keep it under 65? Will James Bond have to wear tactical gear?’ one actress said.
Film maker Michael Whiteacre said he’s already seen change.
Producers and actors are packing up and moving to a new valley — one with no restrictions.
Whiteacre said more shooting means more money.
But former porn actress and founder of the Pink Cross Foundation, Shelly Luben, warns of something else.
‘What they bring with them is rampant – STDs, prostitution, drug trafficking, let me tell you — they are going to recruit young women in Phoenix,’ Luben said.
‘Wherever work is, of course, I am going to flock to that as well,’ said actress Amy Brook.
Brook started making Internet movies in Phoenix in 2008, and like Thomas, is willing to come back if it means freedom of expression.
‘Say a construction worker has to wear a hard hat, OK, but the building he’s building is still going to look the same when it’s done. But if a performer has to wear a condom, it’s not going to show up the same way, and it’s not going to be the same in the end,’ Brook said.” (sic)
Interesting. Good to see that Shelle Belle was on hand to chime in – her relevance and insights are second to none (I’m joking, I’m joking – what a gd joke!!). Taryn Thomas – plenty of experience and relevance. Amy Brooke (Brook) – plenty of experience and relevance. Shelley “Roxy” Lubben? Not so much.
Here’s some video.
2a. The 2012 TLARAW.com Award nominees were announced!!
TLARAW.com is one of the largest online and direct mail DVD and VOD entertainment retailers in the US. The TLA RAW Awards is an annual program that honors the best in “straight”* adult entertainment, sex toys, and community culture.
(*don’t worry!! TLA has a whole suite of community and content themed sites including TLA RAW, TLA Gay, and TLA Cult –> all that here!!)
Now I know what you may be thinking: “Another porn awards whatever whatever… Who cares?”
But you should care about this one because this one is all about consumers and fans!! Consumers and fans vote for their favorites in 16 categories (which is a totally manageable amount btw). Some of the categories are expected (ie Best Porn Movie), others are uniquely TLA Raw (ie Sickest Porn, Best Freakout). Here’s some text about the awards from organization itself:
“Once again, it’s time to vote for the very best! We give you the 2012 TLA Raw Awards!
All of our nominees deserve to be rewarded with at least one million dollars for their contribution this year to sexual health and release (yes, we mean masturbation) but unfortunately, we’re not offering that. Instead, they have the chance to win something even more valuable. Yes, we’re speaking of the most coveted award in the adult industry, The TLA RAW Award!
We’ve picked our nominees based on our deeply perverted editorial staff’s voting as well as sales and popularity of stars, companies and products here on TLARAW.com. If you feel like our nominees do not represent your own personal feelings on the category, write your thoughts on a piece of paper, fold it up and shove it up your ass.
Now, it’s up to you. Voting will close at 11:59PM ET on Saturday, March 31st. We encourage you to vote for your favorite in each category and please, feel free to vote more than once. Victory is up to you! Once you’ve made your selections in each category, be sure to click the large VOTE button at the bottom of the page to record your votes.” (sic, here)
Fun!! You should go vote… now… here!!
2b. If you need some help with your selections, here is PVV’s take on some relevant folks and films and producers…

3. I received the following text in a press release with the accompanying image. I found it appalling and contemplated whether or not to even share it, but I decided I should as it invokes many critical issues.
“Hire a real live leprechaun for your St Patrick’s Day promotion & be the talk of the town! Our professional little people entertainers are reliable & very experienced – they have appeared on talk shows, radio shows & in Hollywood movies. Have a Leprechaun stand outside of your establishment & wave to the passing cars – GUARANTEED to stop traffic! The Leprechauns can meet, greet & mingle with your patrons, take photos, hand out promotional material (giveaways & swag), or serve drinks & shooters!” (sic)
Am I just being sensitive? Am I somehow contradicting myself in feeling bothered by this? I fully support individual autonomy, which includes an individual’s right to engage in whatever self-presentation they choose and earn a living however they see fit (barring instances of civil rights violations and/or coercion, of course)… but this bothers me.
What do you think?
(ps contact and booking information for this service was omitted on purpose… but if you are interested for reals, email me and I will pass it along)
