Originally from Sonora, California, Brooke Haven has been working as adult film talent since the mid-2000s. She started out as exotic dancer, shakin’ her ass and breaking hearts from San Francisco to Paris, France, before she made the transition to hardcore.
Brooke is currently involved with several production projects in addition to her work in front of the camera. Consequently, she’s super-busy!! But, like the champion she is, she was able to take a second out to give Porn Valley Vantage a quick-and-dirty piece of her mind. Read on!!
What is your favorite thing about working in the adult film industry? What’s the most surprising?
“My favorite thing about working in the industry is the way it has opened up my awareness to my own body. The most surprising thing I learned when I was new to the industry was that it’s nothing like the film ‘Boogie Nights’ (lol!)… In fact, it’s the opposite – everything is very professional and safe.
In a nutshell, what are the relationships like between people working together in a scene?
The best thing about being an active member of the adult industry is the closeness and compassion that is actually present in the ‘on-camera-relationships’ if you will. Yet, at the same time, I have also seen them be very cold and frigid. Those times are usually unexpected.
How has working in the industry affected your personal life?
On a negative level, working in the adult industry [has resulted in my being] unjustly stereotyped. Also, when it comes to dating, most men are intimidated and/or have trust issues. But, on a positive note, it has opened my mind up to new fetishes and sexual adventures that were taboo [to me] before I began my career.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
My long-term goal is to someday have my own talk show on television!
If you could tell them one thing, what do people need to know about you?
People should know that even though I’m an adult actress, I am still a human being full of feelings and concern for those around me… so don’t judge me!â€
Yeah, back off punks!! Don’t mess with Brooke!!
But seriously, Brooke Haven is easily one of the more popular women working in the business today. She is also one of the most awesome.
This past June, I attended a Cal-OSHA hearing in Los Angeles. It was a pretty intense meeting: an open public forum wherein a panel of Cal-OSHA representatives heard from the 100 or so people in attendance. The overarching issue at hand was safety on adult film sets.
Although there seemed to be many people present with myriad perspectives and opinions on the issue, most of the people who were speaking were vehemently of the mindset that adult film sets are very unsafe workplaces. In apparent support of this perspective, there were a small handful (3 or 4 to my recollection) of women who shared, rather flamboyantly, the negative experiences they had had in the industry.*
People raged as the collective mood in the room became more and more in/tense. Not surprisingly, many of the performers in attendance who may have had experiences working in the industry that differed from those being shared did not seem eager to position themselves in the crossfire. It was getting pretty one-sided.
But then, in the middle of some serious intensity, a petite woman fully vamped to the nines – think a hott contemporary version of Amanda Woodward crossed with everything “Girls, Girls, Girls†(1987) – stood up and raised her hand.
After waiting patiently for several minutes to be called on, she proceeded to inform the panel and the rest of the room that she was Brooke Haven, that she had worked in the adult industry for quite a bit longer than the women who were currently causing the uproar, and that her experiences had been nothing at all like what was being described.
For a moment, the room was silent… and the craziness resumed at an even more fevered pitch.
Now this is just my memory of it, but it brought tears to my eyes. It was one of the bravest things I had ever seen – Brooke putting her self out there, on the spot and under a microscope, in what was a very hostile environment… speaking out when no one else could or would.
Like I said, Brooke Haven is awesome.
Show her your support – follow her on twitter and say hi!
*While I have immeasurable sympathy for persons who have survived any form of abuse and/or exploitation and value individuals’ lived experiences and personal truths as both significant dimensions of identity construction and necessary points of analysis, I found myself rather incredulous during these women’s statements for reasons beyond the scope of this essay. Maybe one day I’ll write something specific that explains why…
